Giant Frozen Squid Discovered Off Coast Of New Zealand

Marine scientists in New Zealand found a corpse of a frozen squid. It was the largest squid that has ever been caught. The scientists will be thawing out the squid to study it and hopefully to discover new secrets of one of the ocean’s mysterious animals.

No one has ever seen a living, grown colossal squid in its natural deep ocean habitat, and scientists hope their examination of the 1,089-pound, 26-foot long colossal squid, set to begin Wednesday, will help determine how the creatures live. The thawing and examination are being broadcast live on the Internet.

Bionic Turtle

Tourists brought a 5” green sea turtle that was missing three of its flippers to a hospital for endangered animals when they found it lying on the ground. After being given injections of antibiotics and a diet of squid the turtle is recovering well. The doctors say that they don’t know how the turtle was able to swim with only one flipper.

Taking Care Of Jellyfish Stings

Most jellyfish stings are not deadly – but that doesn’t mean when you get stung that nothing will happen. That is why it is always important to take care of yourself right away when you discover that you have been stung.

Coral Reefs

Living organisms make up unique structures in the water that we know as coral reefs. These unusual reefs can be found in shallow and tropical marine water that has almost no nutrients in it. Water that is concentrates with high nutrient levels harm the reef because of the algae that it produces. Reefs extend from 30°N to 30°S of the equator, but they do not grow deeper than 100 ft. or where the temperature of the water falls below 16 °C (72 °F).

Giant Squid Found On Tasmanian Beach

Zoologists were amazed when a 200 kilogram giant squid washed up on the shores of west coast Tasmania on a beach near Strahan. At this time they have no idea how it made it on shore.

Zoologists from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery say the squid’s hood and body is more than three metres long and they estimate its full size with tentacles would have been seven metres, with a weight of around 200kg.

Grouper

The word “grouper” comes from Portuguese “garoupa”. One interesting fact to know is that in New Zealand and Australia, the name for several species of Grouper is referred to as Groper, as in the Epinephelus lanceolatus Queensland Groper. In the Middle East, the fish is known as Hammour, and is widely eaten, especially in the Gulf Region.

Coral

Corals are marine plants and animals from the class Anthozoa and live as small sea anemone-like polyps, typically in colonies of many other identical individuals. The group includes the important reef builders that are found in tropical oceans, which secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton.

Great White Shark

The great white sharks are the largest carnivores that you can find in the ocean. Scientists are still studying these fascinating creatures and trying to unravel their mysteries. They know that they are creatures that travel alone and are in constant search for food. They have still not determined how long they live and how quickly they grow.

Jellyfish

Jellyfish are marine animal invertebrates that belong to the Scyphozoan class, and in turn the phylum. The body of an adult jellyfish is composed of a bell-shaped, jelly producing substance enclosing its internal structure, from which the creature’s tentacles are suspended. Each tentacle is covered with stinging cells that can sting or kill other animals: most jellyfish use them to secure prey or as a defense mechanism.
